When do you have to change tyres in Estonia?
Estonia’s Traffic Act sets fixed dates — and they are not just recommendations, they are mandatory:
- Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 1 March. In practice, fit winter tyres as soon as the average daily temperature drops below +7 °C — in Estonia that is usually the end of October.
- Studded tyres are allowed from 15 October to 31 March. In exceptional cases the local authority may extend these dates — watch for announcements from the Transport Administration (Transpordiamet).
- Summer tyres are fine from the second half of April, once the night frosts are definitely over.
At the height of the season — especially at the end of October and the start of April — queues get long. We recommend booking two weeks ahead. On Automagic every workshop offers its own time, so you can see free slots without phoning round.
Summer, winter and studless tyres — what is the difference?
- Summer tyres — a hard rubber compound with optimal water drainage. In the cold they harden and slide — below +7 °C they are dangerous.
- Winter tyres (studless) — a softer rubber compound with fine cuts (sipes) for grip on snow and ice. Standard winter tyres in Estonia carry the 3PMSF marking (the snowflake symbol).
- Studded tyres — a winter tyre with metal studs. The best grip on ice, but noisy and hard on the asphalt. In Estonia they are allowed for half the year.
- All-season tyres — a compromise; they suit low-mileage cars in southern Europe, but for an Estonian winter a winter tyre is always safer.
What does a tyre change include?
A standard tyre change usually includes:
- Taking off and refitting all 4 wheels
- Cleaning and greasing the rims
- Tightening the wheel nuts to the correct torque
- Checking and setting the tyre pressures
- A visual inspection (wear, damage)
Balancing is usually done straight after the tyre change — it removes vibration from the steering wheel and protects the suspension. At the height of the season balancing is charged separately (€3–8 per wheel); at other times it is often included in the price.
Four-wheel alignment (setting the wheel angles) is a separate service — have it done every 20,000 km or when the car pulls to one side. It costs €40–80.
Tyre storage: at home or at the workshop?
Tyres keep better in a workshop’s storage than on a balcony or in a garage. Here’s why:
- A constant temperature — extreme swings wear the rubber compound faster.
- UV protection — sunlight dries out the rubber.
- The right position — tyres on rims and tyres without rims need different storage positions.
- Convenience — no carrying them yourself, and next time the tyres are already there.
In Estonia storage typically costs €40–80 a season. At peak times you can often get a package deal (change + storage + balancing) for around €100–150.
What is tyre wear and when should you replace a tyre?
In Estonia the minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm on a summer tyre and 3.0 mm on a winter tyre. In practice, though:
- A winter tyre already loses its properties at 4 mm — replacing it then is recommended for safety.
- A summer tyre clears water well down to 3 mm — below that the risk of aquaplaning is high.
- Check the tyre’s age — after 5–6 years the rubber dries out, even if the tread looks fine.
The production date is the last 4 digits of the DOT code on the sidewall (for example, 2823 = week 28 of 2023).

Frequently asked questions
When do the queues start and how can I avoid them?
In Estonia the peaks are the end of October (winter tyres) and the start of April (summer tyres). We recommend booking at least two weeks ahead. On Automagic every workshop offers its own time, so you can see free slots without phoning round.
Can I keep my old tyres?
Yes — many workshops offer seasonal storage for €40–80. If your flat is small, this is usually more convenient than keeping them on the balcony.
Does a tyre change include balancing?
Often yes, especially outside the peak season. At peak times it is charged separately (€3–8 per wheel). Read the offer carefully — package offers are usually the best value.
Are studded tyres allowed in Estonia?
Yes, from 15 October to 31 March. In some places the local authority may extend the period. Studded tyres give the best grip on ice, but they wear the asphalt and are noisy.
How do I know whether my tyres are still good?
Check two things: the tread (summer tyre ≥ 3 mm, winter tyre ≥ 4 mm) and the age (under 6 years). The DOT code on the sidewall shows the production date — the last 4 digits are the week and year.
How long does a tyre change take?
A standard change of 4 wheels plus balancing usually takes 30–45 minutes. At peak times you may wait longer, even with a booking.
Can I bring my own tyres?
Yes, many workshops do this. Mention it in the job description so the workshop can quote for labour only.
