What is car repair?
Car repair is any work that puts a vehicle right, from routine servicing to complex repairs. In Estonia it usually means four kinds of service: diagnostics, mechanical repairs (engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes), bodywork and paintwork and electronics (ECU, sensors, wiring).
Every workshop specialises a little differently. A general workshop can handle routine servicing, but for a hybrid, an automatic gearbox or body damage it pays to choose a certified specialist. With Automagic you describe the job once and offers come from workshops in your region — no phoning round.
The most common faults on cars in Estonia
Estonia’s climate — salted winter roads, sudden swings in temperature, gravel roads — wears a car out faster than in many southern European countries. In workshops’ experience, the most common faults in Estonia are:
- Brakes — discs and pads wear out after 30,000–60,000 km; a squealing noise is a sure sign.
- Suspension — shock absorbers, track rod ends and ball joints are the main “consumables” on Estonian roads.
- Starting problems — the battery in winter, the starter relay or starter motor in summer.
- Check-engine light — often an oxygen sensor, EGR valve or ignition coil. Diagnostics come first (around €30–60).
- Rust damage — especially from salted roads; an underbody check goes hand in hand with the roadworthiness test.
If you don’t know what’s wrong, start with diagnostics. In Estonia it usually costs €30–80 and lets you get an accurate offer from the very first visit.
How do you choose a reliable car repair workshop?
You can recognise a good workshop by three things: technical competence, transparent pricing and clear communication. Before you choose an offer, check:
- Specialisation — has the workshop worked on your make and model? German cars usually have different specialists from Japanese or Korean ones.
- A written estimate — ask for a quote before work starts. A good workshop sends it by text message or email.
- Warranty — quality work comes with a warranty (usually 6 months or 20,000 km, with labour and parts covered separately).
- An explanation, not jargon — if the mechanic can’t explain the work done, ask somewhere else.
On Automagic, only verified workshops — with their address and phone number filled in — see published jobs and make offers.
Original parts vs remanufactured parts
One of the biggest decisions affecting the price is the choice of parts. There are three types:
- OEM (original) — made for the manufacturer, exactly the same as fitted at the factory. The most expensive, the best fit, a long warranty.
- OES / grade-A aftermarket — from the same factory that makes the OEM parts, just without the carmaker’s logo. 20–40% cheaper and practically identical. Often the best value for money.
- Remanufactured (reman) — used parts overhauled at the factory (starter motors, alternators, gearboxes). 50–70% cheaper than new and usually with a warranty. A good fit for older cars.
For an older car, remanufactured parts often make more financial sense than paying for originals. For a more expensive car (under 5 years old, with a solid residual value), OEM is well worth considering.
Warranty and what it covers
In Estonia, repairs for consumers carry a 2-year claim period under the Consumer Protection Act. In practice, workshops give their own, shorter “technical warranty”:
- 6–12 months or 10,000–20,000 km on the work done
- A separate warranty on parts — often in line with the manufacturer’s warranty
- For bodywork, usually 2–5 years on the paintwork
Keep the invoice and a written description of the work done — without them, making a claim is hard. Jobs done through Automagic stay in the vehicle’s service history with the date, mileage and the workshop’s name.

Frequently asked questions
How do car repair offers come in through Automagic?
You publish a job and verified workshops in your region see it. Each workshop sends a price and a time; the offers appear on your job’s page and you choose the one that suits you.
Does Automagic charge a commission?
No. Asking for offers is free for you and commits you to nothing. The workshop sets its own price and Automagic adds nothing on top.
What is diagnostics and do I need it?
Diagnostics is a check of the vehicle that reads the fault codes and tests its systems. You need it when you don’t know what’s wrong (for example, the check-engine light is on). It usually costs €30–80 and is credited against the repair bill.
Is the price final?
The offer covers the problem as described. If the workshop finds extra work (for example, rust hiding something else), it must agree it with you first.
Can I bring my own parts?
Some workshops allow it, others don’t (because of their quality guarantee). Mention it in the job description — then workshops can quote for labour only.
What warranty applies to car repairs?
In Estonia consumers have a 2-year claim period. On top of that, workshops usually give a 6–12 month technical warranty on the work done and a separate warranty on the parts used.
